7thMan interviews Ksubi co-founder Paul Wilson on the return of Ksubi’s ‘Kolored’ denim
It’s only fair to say that Ksubi, the Australian denim brand, has managed in a decade to gain the respect of the industry but also an extensive following practically by disobeying every single rule from the fashion industry rulebook(it’s imaginary, don’t look it up, it doesn’t exist) and by being edgy enough to produce their own rules!
With the brand re-launching their 'Kolored' denim line at Selfridges this month with an exclusive video directed by Daniel Askill(scroll down to see it), 7thMan caught up with co-founder and probably one of the coolest man to come from down under, Mr Paul Wilson to gives us a raw(and pretty funny) insight into the world of Ksubi.
1. Congratulations on the the new denim line & the brilliant Kolors video.Excellent cinematography. What is the idea behind it?
The idea was to find a unique way of visualising our ‘kolored’ denim. We love cars and girls so the idea was never a stretch. We found the coloured tyres by accident on line and couldn't resist them. Daniel turned it into a battle of woman vs machine.
2. How was it working with Daniel Askill & Bambi?
Dans a good friend of ours, we all went to the Burning Man Festival together a few years back. He did a film about our journey there and we have always talked about doing something else together. He's a real visionary.
Bambi is doing great at the moment so it was great to have her come home for the shoot. We only had her for 24hrs before she went back to NYC; she was full of energy straight off the plane at 6am. Ready to go, she turned up really hyped and excited but as soon as the cameras start rolling she takes on this effortless cool persona that really comes across in the film.
3. You are a pretty radical clothing company. Isn¹t coloured denim a bit of a safe approach for you guys (no rats running around this
time?)?
Well we have done coloured denim since around 2002 so we do consider that it is part of our label. We do a little bit every season to be honest. What's safe is the denim palette of late. All we've been seeing is black, aged black, grey, indigo, we wanted to "bring denim back to life”.
4. What makes Ksubi Kolors different?
Absolutely nothing, its just coloured denim(laughs). It just so happens that ours is affordable and looks better than everyone elses... Well I guess I should let
the public decide the later!(laughs)
5. After working with Jeremy Scott & Richard Nicoll, should we expect anymore high-profile designer collaborations from Ksubi?
That's something we don't plan. We work with our friends, people we admire. There is more coming this year but I can't say who yet because they are all in the works. We work in fashion because we love working with creative people and love travelling the world and meeting them, it isn’t such a bad
job!
